Beguiling

Beguiling is a portrait of Tomitsuyu. In 2019, I had the privilege of meeting and photographing her when she was working as a Geiko in Kyoto, Japan.

Once a thriving tradition, the Geisha, known as Geiko in Kyoto, are now dwindling in numbers as the years pass. Adorned in expensive Kimonos and with their white-painted faces adorned with near-perfect makeup, Geishas are one of the oldest and most important art forms celebrated in Japan to this day. However, their profession is facing challenges due to modern culture overshadowing traditional art forms. This has contributed to hindering the Geisha culture and has sadly forced many artists to leave their profession, putting this age-old tradition at risk of disappearing.
